Atelier San Juan will be moving to a new facility in 2019 at the Casa Blanca Museum in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico. El Instituto de Cultura Puertorriqueña has granted us a beautiful new classroom studio on the second floor of the museum. Students will have the opportunity to draw and paint at Casa blanca’s beautiful gardens as well. Atelier San Juan was established in 2006, by artist Luis Borrero. The atelier method of instruction entails training in a workshop under the instruction of a working artist, and accordingly, at Atelier San Juan classical methods of drawing and painting are taught in an intimate studio setting.
Students at the Atelier begin by drawing from inanimate objects, such as the sphere, and progress to working from antique plaster casts of varying degrees of complexity. After a thorough study of drawing fundamentals, students advance to oil painting, and finally to working directly from the human figure.
A Portfolio Development Curriculum is available for those students seeking admission to colleges and scholarships. 97% of students from Atelier San Juan have been accepted, with significant scholarship packages, into a variety of different programs including; the Cooper Union, FIT, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (the BFA, Certificate, and the MFA programs), Pratt Institute, Savannah College of Art and Design, and Ringling College of Art and Design, among others.
