Atelier San Juan is located in the heart of historic Old San Juan, Puerto Rico. The studio was established in 2007, by Luis Borrero and his former wife, fellow artist Amber Lia-Kloppel. The atelier method of instruction entails training in a workshop under the instruction of a working artist, and accordingly, at Atelier San Juan classical methods of drawing and painting are taught in an intimate studio setting.

Students at the Atelier begin by drawing from inanimate objects, such as the sphere, and progress to working from antique plaster casts of varying degrees of complexity. After a thorough study of drawing fundamentals, students advance to oil painting, and finally to working directly from the human figure.

A Portfolio Development Curriculum is available for those students seeking admission to colleges and scholarships, and many students from Atelier San Juan have been accepted, with scholarship packages, into a variety of different programs including; the Cooper Union,  FIT,  the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (the BFA, Certificate, and the MFA programs), Pratt Institute, Savannah College of Art and Design, and Ringling College of Art and Design, among others.
