Our Curriculum

Atelier San Juan is focused on offering a traditional approach to drawing and painting, and we encourage students to undertake drawing fundamentals before beginning to paint in oils. Students are offered an individualized structured curriculum that begins with light and shade theory, perspective, proportion, and the study of basic inanimate forms. The study of oil painting is recommended once the student has demonstrated proficiency in drawing and composition. Students begin their painting practices by learning about their materials and the various historical techniques used by past masters. Once students have gained the necessary skills in both drawing and painting, a thorough study of the live model is encouraged through our intensive advanced workshops.

Portfolio Development for College Admission

Atelier San Juan has helped a number of students create portfolios specifically for admission to under-graduate and graduate schools, and has created a Portfolio Development Curriculum. Students have been accepted, with significant scholarship packages, at various prestigious institutions including; The Cooper Union,  FIT,  The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (the BFA, Certificate, and the MFA programs), Pratt Institute, Savannah College of Art and Design, Ringling College of Art and Design and Rhode Island School of Design, among others.
